The Lottery
1.
No, I remember Krueger talking about this and
some of the younger kids. The foreshadowing could be how specific he was with
the rocks, and how strict the parents seen. He lulls us with how happy and
joyful they seem.
2.
In a small village in the past, this would never
happen in a big town, or in modern day. Less likely. I would not think a happy
little village would attack on of their own like that,
3.
They all
show the individuality of humans, they all have their own families and lives.
Tessie was loud, and wanted to change the traditions that they have stuck with
for a long time.
4.
The beginning shows a happy village, and then it
turns out to have this awful and sad tradition. We think of a lottery as a good
thing that you want to win, but they have it being an awful, and painful
stoning.
5.
a.
Delacroix- they pronounce his name wrong (the
cross) this symbolizes religious turmoil in their village
b.
Graves- this shows that someone will die.
c.
Summers- this is happening in summer. Summer
brings life, but he takes one away
d.
Bentham-
e.
Hutchinson- supposed to refer to Anne
Hutchinson- she stood up against bad things
f.
Warner- he doesn’t want the lottery to change
even though he saw all the bad that it caused
g.
Martin-
7. the box is battered because it has been used
for generations and is a normal part of their lives, I think it means that they
should give it up and move on. The black dot means bad luck to the one who
picks it. The stones symbolize death
8. I don’t think she likes it, she
seems to make it seem cruel, and wants them to change.
9. Old fashioned laws that people
are too stubborn to change.
10. The Holocaust, they were hated
for no real meaning.
The Lottery shows that humans stick
to traditions. We think of them as safety, and that they will help us. Many
people are afraid to give up our old traditions, even if they hinder our daily
life. People who try to change our views on our old traditions are singled out
and through badly upon. Humans will blindly follow what worked for those before
them; they don’t stop to think that there may be a better, safer, or less
harmful way to get the same result. This also shows that we don’t really care
about violence as long as it is tradition. We still like watching shows, and
games, with physical interaction and harm. Many of humans even like to watch
professional fighting. The majority of humans take some interest in violence,
we may not all outright like it, but violence comes in many ways, and we all
use it in some way. In many ways we feel that violence will be the best way to
solve any problem that we might have. Our culture involves violence. That is
the way we currently are and we have to change if we want to better our society
as a whole. Humans think that violence is okay because it is tradition, but we
have to take the first step and go against tradition; even if this can get us
looked down upon by others around us.
